Like a cross between a zebra, an antelope, and a giraffe with an incredibly long blue-black tongue, the shy and gentle Opaki was considered essentially a mythical beast for many years. Stories that the northern Zaire natives told about the rainforest-dwelling herbivore and drawings of the animal just didn’t convince European scientists of it’s existence until they finally laid eyes on it in1900.
