Well do you? Huh, huh? Deep voices, that’s what.
According to a recent study by Whale Acoustics (no, I am NOT making that up) and published in the Endangered Species Research journal Blue whales songs have been getting deeper. In some cases up to 31% deeper.
This is not a totally new occurrence. Researchers have been tracking the phenomenon and first noticed it about eight years ago. They are unsure why the songs have gotten deeper and what the exact implications may be.
One hypothesis is that an increasingly noisy ocean environment might be to blame. In fact one of the purposes of the Whale Acoustics organization is to study the impact of man made noise on this endangered population. Another prominent theory centers around a post-whaling increase in population since more plentiful potential mates may mean the need to be heard at greater distances is diminished so the deeper tones could be utilized more.
I am going with the second theory since every guy knows the road to romance is made much smoother by employing the deep and dulcet tones of Barry White.
